Report 2009

In May 2006 Sue Hudson, who was not a sailor but had lived in Rock for some years, decided it was a great shame that the local school children did not sail or have the opportunity to see if they liked the sport.  She approached 12 friends and asked them if they would each give £75 to sponsor a local child to have 6 sailing lessons at Camel Sailing at Rock. She raised the money and a few weeks later formed a small committee to organise these lessons. A charity was formed and more money raised.

Soon the children from St. Minver School were joined by children from Padstow School.  Sadly Sue died in 2008 but she has left a wonderful legacy, a thriving charity and so far over 100 local children are having fun and learning to sail.

This summer we will have children from Port Isaac to the North and Trevisker to the South and we will be giving lessons to over 80 children. We have also formed a sailing club for the children who obtain their RYA stage 3 qualification.  This new club, CEYS, will organise racing most weeks.  The club's members, their helpers and parents have all been made affiliated members of Rock Sailing and Water Ski Club. We can use their safety boats, starting boat Andromeda and club house.  This is a wonderful help to us and I hope in time as our young sailors become older they will be members of RSWSC themselves.

None of this would have been possible without the support of many people and organisations.  The Royal Yachting Association has a scheme, Onboard, which is there to help and encourage people just like us who introduce young people to sailing.  We often turn to the RYA for practical help.  There are many rules and regulations we have to be aware of and observe but a phone call to their local representative soon resolves any problem.

Our funding has come from grant giving trusts, the local authority, the National Lottery, Cornwall Community Foundation, The Padstow Harbour Commissioners and many individuals who have given us financial help or donated boats to us.

Our fleet of dinghies continues to grow.  We now have 9 Picos, 2 Toppers, 5 Fevas, 1 Funboat, 1 Escape and 5 x 420s.  The 420s were purchased from Radley College.  They are in need of restoration and are too big at the moment for our young sailors but will be of great use in a year or two.

Many thanks to all the people and organisations who have helped us.

Lucky Local Children

Report 2008

Help and Encouragement From So Many

Camel Estuary Youth Sailing, a charity based in Rock founded by Sue Hudson in May 2006, is now in the middle of its third summer of sailing lessons for school children.

In the summer of 2006 there were only 12 children from St Minver Primary School.  They owned no boats; the lessons were given in Wayfarer Dinghies which are large for children aged 10 and 11.

In September 2006 they were joined by Children from Padstow Primary school thanks to a donation from the Padstow Harbour Commissioners who are keen to see local children sailing in the Estuary.

Over 100 children have been given sailing lessons. Four more local schools have joined in, St Issey, St Breward, Wadebridge and St Mabyn.  These additional schools have been partly funded by a magnificent donation from The National Lottery.

They now have a fleet of 8 new Laser Pico dinghies two of which were part paid for by a generous donation from The Cornwall Community Foundation.

Rock Sailing and Water Ski Club has been another great supporter of this scheme to give local children a chance to sail in the wonderful Camel Estuary.  A sailing club CEYS has been formed and all members of CEYS are affiliated members of Rock Sailing and Water Ski Club.

The RYA has been enormously supportive with finance and advice through their Onboard scheme.

Many donations large and small continue to be given.

Thanks to every one.
